Air abrasion
Air
abrasion is an alternative way to removing cavities from teeth. Instead
of drilling the cavity out, air abrasion brushes cavities away with a
fine stream of aluminum oxide powder. It's the dentist's version of a
miniature sand blaster. The main advantage of air abrasion is the
ability to minimize the
preparation of the tooth, as well as doing it usually without the
necessity of anesthesia. Hence, the patient leaves our office
without a numb face.Air abrasion does have its limitations. It can only be used on smaller cavities, and it cannot be used to remove amalgam fillings. However, it works well in treating smaller cavities before they become a bigger problem.
